On a sunny and dry circuit of Nürnburg, the first session of today's free practice was held for the Grand Prix of Luxembourg. Shortly after the first teams had roughened the circuit surface with rubber, the faster teams entered the track. It looked as if the Mc Larens were superior again, however as soon as Michael Schumacher entered the track he showed that he is going for 10 points this weekend. With a time of 1:20.466 he was 0.349 seconds faster then Mika Häkkinen who was second. The top six was completed with Frentzen, Irivine, Coulthard and Fisichella.

Jos Verstappen was the first driver on the track this morning to check his car for one lap. During his first fast lap, he set a time of 1:25.570, however on his lap after that, he missed a braking point causing him to return to the pits. Jos remained inside for a long time, but at the end of the session he went out twice improving his time from 1:24.718 to 1:24.261, ending the session at a bit disappointing 21st place.
