The first session of today's free practice ...

Published on 11 September 1998 by Verstappen Info Page

The first session of today's free practice for the Grand Prix of Italy was held under a cloudy but dry sky. The session started bad for the Arrows team, since both cars suffered motor problems on their first out lap. The both Ferraris drove very fast in front of their home crowd. Although the Ferrari mechanics worked hard on Michaels car during the start of the session, he was able to set the fastest time in 1:25.246, followed by Eddy Irvine at 0.074. Mc Laren was this time best of the rest with David Coulthard on third and Mika Häkkinen and fourth position at almost one second behind Michael Schumacher.

Jos Verstappen set his best time at 1:28.606, just behind his team mate Rubens Barrichello. As usual, both drivers improved each other's times during the session. Rubens ended on position 16, and Jos on position 17.
