Max looking forward to Mexican GP: 'We need to get the set-up right'

Published on 05 November 2021 by Stefan Meens

After two consecutive wins in 2017 and 2018, Max Verstappen looks to be in contention for another victory at the Mexican Grand Prix, upcoming weekend. “I have a lot of good memories here and I’m looking forward to getting back in the car”, said Max, who remains realistic: “It can look good on paper, but we still have to get the set-up of the car spot-on. My preparation and way of working stay the same as they’ve been all rear. Every weekend, it’s all about making the most of what you have. It’s all about the details. We have to get it right in order to win.”

The Autodromo Hermanos Rodríguez is located two kilometres above sea level. Will the altitude and thinner air advantage the Honda power-unit compared to Mercedes? “It was an advantage the last few years, but the engines have changed since 2019, so we’ll have to wait and see how that works out this year. But in the past, racing at this altitude has always been positive for us.”

Earlier this week, Max’ 2021 British GP crash helmet has gone on display at the Max Verstappen Store in Swalmen (Bosstraat 91A, 6071 XT). Its stand-out feature are the red stripes, courtesy of the tyre barriers at Copse corner, where Max ended up after a 51G impact.

“To be honest, it’s not something I enjoy reflecting on, it wasn’t a nice memory”, said Max, who added: “But it does show how safe my Schubert helmet is. And it shows how big that impact was. It’s great for the fans to be able to see that helmet on display.”
