The first free Saturday morning practice was disturbed by rain. At the end of the training the track dried. Jos was long time 3th but then had to stop with gearbox problems. In the lottery of coming on the circuit in the right time with the right tyres, Ralf Schumacher was finally the fastest before Alesi and Hill, but these results don't mean much as neither does mean anything the 16th time of Hakkinen. Michael Schumacher even didn't came on the track!
Jos' time on a much wetter track was at the end of the training still good for the 14th position. Jos was, except his gearbox problem, quite satisfied about his Stewart. The brake balance problem was solved. For the qualification training everyone expects it to be dry and Jos thinks he can make a good qualifying time.
